Deaths of 2 Florida deputies by suicide puts focus on mental health of law enforcement


ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Florida — A sheriff’s section has been left surprised soon after two married deputies, the mothers and fathers of a 1-month-aged son, died as a consequence of suicide in just times of every single other.

St. Lucie Sheriff Ken Mascara introduced a statement on Fb indicating Deputy Clayton Osteen, 24, who was off-duty, attempted to take his everyday living just ahead of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Osteen’s household took him off everyday living-support on Sunday.

Monday early morning, Osteen’s spouse, Deputy Victoria Pacheco, took her individual daily life in the wake of her husband’s demise, the assertion says.

The sheriff suggests in the statement that regulation-enforcement officers have to deal not only with worry in their individual lives but also with the pressure of residents they serve. He explained he hopes the tragedy can be a “catalyst for change, a catalyst to aid relieve the stigma bordering mental perfectly-becoming and normalize the discussion about the troubles so many of us encounter on a regular basis.”

“As sheriff, I noticed these two deputies as youthful, bold and a wonderful compliment to my currently incredible team of professionals,” Mascara says. “To the common community, and from time to time even myself, it is quick to watch law enforcement as superhuman … but let’s not fail to remember that they are human just like us.”
